
Springbok Aviation Services (PTY) LTD: AMO 878 Springbok Aviation Services (SAS) is a South African Civil Aviation Authority (SA CAA) Approved Maintenance Organisation (AMO), number 878 and currently maintains a C47/DC-3 ZS-GPL and a DC-4 ZS-AUA, for Springbok Flying Safaris, it’s sister company. Although SAS is a relatively new company of four years, the people involved have extensive experience in the maintenance and operation of propliners. Its personnel have been responsible for and or involved with the complete restoration of 3 x DC-4’s and one DC-3. These restorations included complete major maintenance on all of the aircraft involved. The people involved are: 1) Capt. Flippie Vermeulen - CEO of SAS: Capt. Vermeulen has been in the employment of South African Airways for the last 35 years and is currently a flight instructor on the B747-400 on the international service. During the late eighties and nineties he was responsible for the formation of the SAA Historic Flight of which he remained the CEO until October 2000. As CEO of the South African Airways Historic Flight, he was the project leader of the complete restoration process of the following aircraft: a) DC-4 ZS-BMH - 1993 
ZS-BMH Mokuti Namibia 2000 b) DC-4 ZS-AUA - 1996 
ZS-AUA MONCHELADBACH - GERMANY 2002 c) DC-4 ZS-AUB - 1997 
ZS-AUB Cape Town 2000 d) DC-3 ZS-BXF - 1995 
ZS-BXF Kalahari 2002 Numerous international awards were won with some of these aircraft. ZS-BMH won the award for the best Classic aircraft in the Transport category at Oshkosh in 1994. 2) Mr. Errol Muller - Maintenance planner and project coordinator: He has extensive experience in maintenance planning. 3) Mr. Pierre Kok - Chief Engineer SAS: Originally employed and trained by South African Airways as an aircraft mechanical technician on Boeings and Airbus aircraft, he soon changed to propliners and worked in the Historic Flight division of SAA during the restoration process of: a) DC-4 ZS-BMH - 1993 b) DC-4 ZS-AUB - 1997 c) DC-4 ZS-AUA - 1996 d) DC-3 ZS-BXF - 1995 4) Mr. Spook Badenhorst: Originally employed and trained by South African Airways as an aircraft structural technician on Boeings and Airbus aircraft, he was responsible for most of the structural restoration work on the aircraft below: a) DC-4 ZS-BMH - 1993 b) DC-4 ZS-AUB - 1997 c) DC-4 ZS-AUA - 1996 d) DC-3 ZS-BXF - 1995 5) Contract Technicians: As many DC-3’s and DC-4’s had been operated in South Africa until recently, many experienced technicians on type are still available and will be employed for the project. Maintenance Base: SAS’s AMO is based in its own hangar, Hangar 5 at Rand Airport, Germiston. This hangar is big enough to accommodate aircraft as big as a B737, and the restoration will be facilitated in this hangar.
